Selfish Reasons For Building Accessible UIs

What if scolding people isn't working and we need to think about selfish reasons to make apps more responsive?

This is an excellent article and the author makes an extremely wise point. I think that we start off with the same point of view - that accessible interfaces are just the right thing we do. But Lawson makes a point that I hadn’t considered.

But experience has also taught me that “eat your vegetables” is one of the least effective arguments in the world. Scolding people might get them to agree with you in public, or even in principle, but it’s unlikely to change their behavior once no one’s watching.

It’s a compelling one - if you make accessibility a moral and ethical issue, you may change behaviour when people are being watched. But otherwise, it’s easy to slip back into old habits. But what if there were some really good selfish reasons to build highly accessible websites?

This article explores some of them and it’s definitely worth a read.
