Flin Flon virtually deserted, thousands more evacuated as wildfires rage in Manitoba

Wildfires rage across northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan — many communities evacuated and several people stranded.

I spent my very early years near Flin Flon, and though I haven’t lived there in over 45 years, it still means a lot to me. So when I read about the fires threatening the town, I felt really bad for the people there. The only bright side? Northern communities know this drill too well, and their evacuation plans are solid. And in light of all the strangeness in the world right now, it is great to see American firefighers up there as well.

Forecasts indicate cooler weather ahead so with luck, the firefighters can get this awful situation under control while limiting the amount of danger they face. But fighting forest fires is dangerous work and we’re lucky to have people brave enough to face down those unpredictable, destructive monsters. I know the 306 (Saskatchewan) and the 204 (Manitoba) well, so I trust those folks will have a lot of trouble paying for their own beers for the foreseeable future.

(Manitoba Premier Web) Kinew said outside help has arrived, including 125 firefighters from the United States.
