I am Canadian and of an advanced age where I don’t quite get Eurovision - kind of like how I never quite got cricket or rugby. It’s exciting and chaotic, but I’m never sure when (or if) to cheer. It’s a confusing spectacle that a huge part of the world has viewing parties for.

‘Idemo, Rivaaaaaaaa!’ we cheered, hands cupped over mouths in disbelief. ‘Idemo, Jugoslavija!’
